Grapevine-Colleyville ISD sets legislative priorities ahead of 2027 session

Prior to the start of the 90th Legislative Session, which begins in January 2027, the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD board of trustees set its legislative priorities and approved them at the Sept. 28 meeting.

GCISD convened a legislative advisory committee composed of district staff, community members and three trustees. The committee met four times in August and September before finalizing its recommendations of priorities to the board.

According to district documents, the four priorities include:

• Ensuring strategic, stable and predictable funding for public education

• Reform to the state’s recapture

• Education Savings Accounts accountability and transparency

• Education recruitment, retention and support

Within each of the priority areas, district documents outline some measures they would support to address the goals.

For example, under the funding for public education priority, GCISD highlighted full funding from the state for mandates and hold-harmless provisions for changes in local and state revenue.

Other measures include requiring voter approval to expand education savings accounts, reimplementing a reduction in recapture payments for districts that pay in advance, expanding other educator benefits and strengthening prior investments in educator compensation.

Trustee Lindsey Sheguit, who served on the legislative advisory committee, said committee members looked to present priorities that would be supported by local representatives.

“One of the other things we were looking for in the legislative committee and our meetings was what items can we actually get traction with with regard to our legislators,” Sheguit said.
