Feedstore BBQ celebrates 25th anniversary in Southlake

The Lafavers family has been in Southlake for nearly 50 years and has been operating Feedstore BBQ since April 25, 2001.

The Southlake Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the anniversary on April 9.

During the event, current operator Mike Lafaevers and his son, West Texas Lafavers, announced that the eatery will soon be adding breakfast items to the menu. West Texas Lafavers said they have recently added it as a catering option, but this will open it up to all guests.

On the menu

The dining options include sandwiches, meat plats, catfish, salads, baked potatoes, pork ribs, burgers, desserts and southern-style side items. The offering of meats includes chopped and sliced brisket, smoked chicken, pulled pork, turkey, ham, sausage, hot links and jalapeño links. Weekly specials such as chicken fried steak [Tuesdays and Thursdays] and burnt ends [Saturdays and Mondays] are also on the menu.

West Texas Lafavers said the business is the official BBQ partner of the UFL’s Dallas Renegades. As part of the agreement with the football team that plays in Frisco, West Texas Lafavers said that Feedstore BBQ takes its trailer to Toyota Stadium and cooks food for the players and staff following games.

The background

The restaurant is one of the oldest operating buildings in the city, according to its website.

The building was first the Bailey Feed Store in the 1950s, started by Earl Bailey. His father, Louis Napoleon Bailey, operated a grocery store in the early 1900s near the White’s Chapel community on Keller Road, now known as Southlake Boulevard, according to a framed store from the defunct Southlake Journal.

The Bailey family history in the area dates back to 1873.

The store later became Miller’s Grocery Store and had two gas pumps when William “Bill” and Phyllis Lafavers moved to Southlake in June of 1974. According to the restaurant website, Southlake had a population of 900 and no red lights.

In the 1970s, Miller’s Grocery Store became Dee’s Hitchin’ Post and later became Southlake Feed & Tack.

The Lafavers purchased the property in 1997 and started Lafavers Enterprises, Inc., and operated the feed store until remodeling and opening the eatery, then called Feedstore BBQ And More.

What else?

West Texas Lafavers said his grandmother, Phyllis, is still involved in the business and still will not share some of the family recipes that go into the side items.

Mike Lafavers manages the location; his siblings Eva and Matt, have played a role. Mike Lafavers' son, West Texas, and daughter Kamy, and nephew Cameron, are part of the family business.
