Grapevine Animal Shelter moves forward with renovation project

A project to renovate the Grapevine Animal Shelter is gaining traction.

Grapevine City Council approved a contract to renovate the Grapevine Animal Shelter with $3,897,209 price limit on the project Nov. 5. This was the amount that was approved by Grapevine voters for the renovations to the animal shelter during the city’s 2017 bond election, according to meeting documents.

However, design of the new shelter to meet the needs of the city and current practices in shelters had an actual price tag of $5.1 million. City Manager Bruno Rumbelow said the city would provide an additional $800,000 in owner-furnished items for the project as well as professional fees of $466,000.

The updated animal shelter will have more space to better accommodate and care for animals coming into the shelter, according to meeting documents. The design of the shelter includes space for surgery procedures and staff and volunteer areas.

Three of the four voter-approved projects from the bond election have been presented to council for project price approval, Rumbelow said. The first and second were the construction of Fire Stations Nos. 2 and 3. These two projects came in more than $1 million under budget, Rumbelow said, which helps provide for the additional costs for the animal shelter.

The fourth project for the Grapevine Golf Clubhouse will also be presented to the council for project price approval at a later date, meeting documents said.
