Colleyville continues renovations plans for new recreation center

Colleyville is making progress in turning an old church into a recreation center with a gym, athletic fields and other amenities.

Council approved an agreement with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects Inc. for design services of the renovation project March 7. The architecture firm was hired in November to provide an assessment of the current building’s roof, plumbing and accessibility.

“The renovation will support to transform what was once a church into a recreation center for the city,” Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Escobedo said.

In September, Colleyville announced plans to purchase the former Covenant Church and its surrounding 15 acres at 3508 Glade Road for $8.5 million. Council later approved certificates of obligation in November to purchase and renovate the property.

The city plans to spend $1.5 million on renovations to the property.

Escobedo said the first phase of construction includes repairing and replacing the roof, renovating the interior and remodeling its entry and hallways. A wrought iron fence with stone columns will be installed along Glade Road, and a new sign will be put at the corner of Glade Road and Roberts Road, according to city documents.

Phase two of the project will involve the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Escobedo said. The board will use the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan to develop a five-year plan for the recreation center’s future amenities.

Once design plans and construction documents are completed, the recreation center renovation project will go out to bid in April.
