Northwest Blvd. bridge at I-35 now open in Georgetown

The city of Georgetown held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 27 for the opening of the Northwest Boulevard bridge over I-35.

The $8.2 million project runs from Rivery Boulevard via a traffic circle on the west side to Austin Avenue on the east side. Georgetown Communications Manager Keith Hutchinson said that it will allow drivers another option for crossing I-35.

“The new bridge fulfills a key mobility goal for the city by providing a new east-west connection in the center of Georgetown,” Hutchinson said in an email. “The bridge is the first east-west connection over I-35 in decades and provides an alternative to Williams Drive.”

He added that the project is the city’s largest since the Southwest Bypass. In the future, the road will extend eastward to connect with FM 971.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation website, the project also included intersection improvements as well as “utility improvements and stormwater and water-quality controls from Fontana Boulevard to Austin Avenue.”

Construction on the project began in September 2019 and was funded by a 2015 city of Georgetown transportation bond.
