The Brazos River Authority implemented Stage 1 drought watch for nine reservoirs in its supply system, including Lake Georgetown, according to a March 30 news release.
What it means
The Stage 1 designation is intended to bring awareness to a developing drought and achieve a voluntary 5% reduction in water use, the release states.
The BRA determined the status by measuring the Palmer Hydrologic Drought Index, which is an indicator of the level of wet or dry conditions in a specific area.
The monthly PHDI dropped because of drier-than-normal conditions, the release states.
What’s next
The BRA asked those who receive water supply from the affected reservoirs to activate an individual drought contingency plan, educate the public on reducing water use and notify customers of any action taken.
If conditions change within the reservoirs, the BRA will notify its customers and the public.
