Partnering with Texas Disposal Systems, the city of Georgetown is offering free holiday string-light recycling to all Georgetown residents until Jan. 31.
This effort helps maintain an efficient recycling process and repurpose the copper found in string lights.
According to the Georgetown’s solid waste contractor, string lights can get tangled with other recycling materials or get tangled on sorting-line conveyor belts, which could stop the sorting line and require disassembling the equipment. This can cause major delays in the recycling process.
As the first city in Central Texas to offer this service, Georgetown has seen a major increase in string-light recycling participation over the past five years, according to a city press release. Approximately 4,870 pounds of strings lights were recycled in 2021, up 3,100 pounds from 2017.
