Georgetown ISD working to relieve campuses at capacity with rezoning for new schools

Rezoning for two new schools is on the horizon in Georgetown ISD, in anticipation of openings at San Gabriel Elementary School and Benold Middle School in the fall of 2024.

What's happening?

During a Nov. 6 workshop, board members heard an initial presentation from district staff about jump-starting the process to create attendance zones for the two new schools coming online for the 2024-25 school year.

This comes as the district is working to address some population pressures at a few of its elementary and middle schools.

Looking back

Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in May showed Georgetown is the fastest-growing city in the country among cities with population of more than 50,000 residents—and that stretch is being felt at the campus level. According to the report from Templeton Demographics, Cooper, Mitchell, Williams and Wolf Ranch elementary schools; Tippit and Wagner middle schools; and East View High School have student populations that are at or near capacity.

What's next?

Tentative timelines show final drafts of the rezoning maps are expected to be shared in the coming weeks, officials said, after campus committees have had a chance to weigh in. An updated demographic report and concepts for the rezoning are expected to be shared at the Nov. 13 board meeting.
