Frisco surpasses water conservation goal for June, July

The city used 460 million less gallons of water in June and July this year than it did last year, said Public Works Director Gary Hartwell during his report at the Aug. 20 City Council meeting.

The city far surpassed the Stage 3 water reduction goal of 10 percent. In June, the city reduced usage by 26.5 percent. In July, usage was reduced 27.4 percent.

"That 460 million gallons of water could be the usage for our entire city in December or January, so that's a great savings," Hartwell said.

As of Aug. 20, Hartwell said the August water usage is down 16 percent compared to 2012.

Lake Lavon levels, higher this year than last year, is another indication of the success of the Stage 3 restrictions mandated by the North Texas Municipal Water District on June 1.

So far this year, the city has recorded 19 inches of rainfall and used about 5 billion gallons of water.

Water usage in the city has ranged from a minimum of 98 gallons per person per day in February to a high of 346 gallons per person per day in July. The average usage so far this year is 176 gallons per person per day, Hartwell said.
