Frisco’s new Mayor Mark Hill was sworn into office July 7.
Hill takes over for Jeff Cheney, who termed out of the position after serving three terms as mayor and three terms as a council member before that.
“This has been an incredible journey,” Cheney said. “This has been the highlight of my professional career. It's completely changed the life of my family. To live in a community you helped build and grow is a very special feeling.”
The details
During the July 7 meeting, council members new and old celebrated the legacy Cheney will leave and what he has accomplished as mayor.
“Today marks the end of an era for our city,” former council member John Keating said. “We did not always agree but we always shared the same goal, doing what's best for Frisco.”
Cheney was also joined by his family to note the occasion. His daughter Kaytlin Cheney joked about how her father first took office when she was four weeks old, and that she is now a sophomore in college.
Other former and current council members noted that Cheney pushed them to think bigger for Frisco. During his time in office, he saw the development of several major projects, such as the PGA of America Headquarters, downtown revitalization, Universal Kids Resort, University of North Texas at Frisco and the eventual groundbreaking of Grand Park earlier this year after 20 years of behind-the-scenes work.
Cheney said it was the Grand Park project that made him want to run for office. He said he saw the project, the scope and the aspiration of it, and it inspired him to get involved.
“You challenge us to think bigger in some of the things we were trying to do,” council member Laura Rummel said.
Looking ahead
Hill will serve a three-year term as mayor. Hill is a business attorney, former Frisco ISD board member and president, and served on the Frisco Economic Development Corp.'s board of directors.
“I’m going to dream big in this role and I ask all of my council members to join me in that,” Hill said after being sworn into office. “We are a community that has a lot ahead of us. I’m going to ask each of y'all to push me, to push our council members."
