Frisco residents could see several new hike and bike trails moving forward soon.
At a May 5 meeting, Frisco City Council approved several items tied to the construction of several local hike and bike trails.
The gist
Council approved an interlocal agreement with Collin County for nearly $1.8 million in funding for the construction of the Panther Creek Veloweb Trail project.
The 0.7-mile trail will span from Sacaton Trail to Panther Creek Parkway, running through the site of the future Panther Creek Sports Complex and connecting to the Veloweb trail system.
Veloweb is a regional trail project that aims to connect more than 100 cities in North Texas, according to the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
In 2023, Collin County voters approved a $20 million parks and open space bond proposition to fund parks and open space projects across the county. Nonprofits and municipalities can apply for funding through the program, according to the county’s website.
According to city documents, Collin County will reimburse Frisco through the county’s 2023 bond program on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis, while Frisco plans to fund its share using park dedication funds.
Frisco officials initially approved applying for funding assistance with the county last May.

Council members also approved an agreement with the county for $724,295 in funding toward the Panther Creek hike and bike trail section from Preston Road to the BNSF Railroad.
The 1.2-mile trail would allow users to travel from the Preston Bridge north of Eldorado Parkway to a connection at the BNSF railroad bridge near the Frisco Springs subdivision, according to city documents.
The trail is currently under construction as part of other ongoing wastewater and creek stabilization projects. City documents state the total trail improvements are estimated to cost close to $3.8 million.
The county funding will come from the 2023 bond program, while Frisco plans to cover remaining costs through city bonds and an American Rescue Plan Act grant, according to city documents.

City documents state both projects will work to improve regional trail connectivity, particularly near the PGA of America Headquarters, Universal Kids Resort and the Fields development.
