Frisco ISD full-day pre-K program to expand for 2021-22 school year

Frisco ISD is opening registration on April 19 for an expanded full-day pre-kindergarten program for the 2021-22 school year.

This year, the program is offered at eight elementary campuses in addition to the district’s Early Childhood School. Class size averages 17 students.

Frisco ISD plans to expand the program next school year to 11 campuses, with bilingual programs offered at Christie and Carroll elementary schools, according to an April 12 presentation to the board of trustees.

Melissa Ellis, the district’s assistant director of Early Childhood, told the board that 877 students are currently enrolled in this year’s full-day program. That is an increase from the 576 students enrolled in the half-day program at this point last school year, she said.

The district previously offered half-day pre-K classes only at the Early Childhood School. Ellis said that only about 47% of eligible children in the district were enrolled in 2017-18. The main reasons involved challenges with scheduling and finances related to the half-day program, she said. The district’s single location was also not as convenient for some families who lived farther away, she said.

“We wanted to make sure we did what it took to reach more of our kiddos,” she said.
