Frisco ISD is seeking a state waiver for elementary classes in pre-K through fourth grade that exceed the state-mandated ratio of 22 students per teacher.
The board approved an agenda item seeking the exemption during its Sept. 21 meeting.
What to know
Texas law limits classes in prekindergarten through fourth grade to 22 students. When a district has a class that exceeds the limit, it must notify the Texas Education Agency and request a maximum class-size exception.
According to the TEA, the exemption process is intended for situations in which the class-size requirement creates an “undue hardship” for a district.
Under Texas law, FISD must submit a waiver request within 30 days of a class exceeding the state-mandated 22 students per teacher ratio. If the district receives the exception, it must notify parents of affected students in writing and identify the specific class and number of students in that class.
Exceptions granted expire at the end of the school year, according to TEA.
