First three weeks of Frisco ISD's 2020-21 school year will be virtual

Frisco ISD's first three weeks of the 2020-21 school year will be in an all-virtual learning environment, according to district Superintendent Mike Waldrip.

The district decided on the all-virtual start due to the spread of the coronavirus, escalating numbers of coronavirus cases and direction from local health authorities, Waldrip told the FISD board of trustees at a July 16 virtual meeting.

FISD parents recently submitted a commitment survey for their student to participate in either virtual learning or on-campus learning for the fall. Students who have selected in-person learning will start in-person instruction Sept. 3, according to an FISD release.

"For the first three weeks, we're suspending the in-person, on-campus piece [for] all students in Frisco ISD," Waldrip said at the meeting.

Details for the all-virtual start are still being finalized, per the release. Additional information will be shared at a special FISD board meeting at 6 p.m. July 23.

An opportunity to change a student's instructional environment will be available before school starts Aug. 13, Waldrip said at the meeting.

Parents can submit a change through FISD's Student Portal, per the release. Parents can begin submitting changes July 27, and the deadline to request a change will be 11:59 p.m. July 30.

After this period, the next opportunity to change a student's instructional environment will be Oct. 16, per the release.

"We may have to actually run master schedules from scratch following the deadline when we reopen this window," Waldrip said at the meeting.
