Frisco is moving forward with plans to bring a Trader Joe’s to the city.
The Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a zoning change at a July 28 meeting for a nearly 10-acre mixed-use development that could be anchored by a Trader Joe’s grocery store.
The history
A Trader Joe’s grocery store was originally proposed at an April 28 planning and zoning commission meeting for the corner of Majestic Gardens Drive and Main Street as part of a larger mixed-use development, including a senior living facility and open green space.
Trader Joe’s officials first confirmed they were considering plans for a Frisco location in October 2025. The project was initially delayed by zoning challenges but is now headed to the Frisco City Council for final approval.
How we got here
Travis Thompson, a representative for landowner SNS Frisco West Main Station LLC, said in a news release that the Trader Joe’s mixed-use property aims to create a destination that improves everyday life for residents “for decades to come.”
Over the past two years, Thompson said he met with City Council members, residents and planning officials to ensure the project aligned with Frisco’s vision. Since then, the project has undergone numerous modifications and enhancements, including:
- Increased parking for residents and visitors
- Expanded open space
- Enhanced landscaping and streetscape improvements along Majestic Gardens
- Architectural refinements designed to improve the development’s appearance and character
- Revisions based on feedback from residents, city staff and surrounding residents
“The idea of a neighborhood grocery store and a senior housing facility fit this site like a glove, better than any site I’ve ever worked on,” Thompson said. “We feel like we’re bringing a very sought-after retailer while providing something the city and its citizens need in a senior housing community.”
What they’re saying
At the meeting, Thompson thanked residents, community members and city officials for sharing feedback on the project. He also expressed confidence in the proposed site, noting that traffic generated by Trader Joe's would not overlap with peak traffic from the nearby Frisco ISD campus.
Addressing what he called "the issue we heard most often," Thompson said the development is expected to generate "roughly three times less traffic than what could currently be produced."
“We did a very thorough traffic study to determine and look at traffic from the school,” Thompson said. “We’ve incorporated some improvements along Majestic Gardens ... we’re very excited about that, something we can offer the neighbors to help with traffic flow from the school.”
Multiple residents expressed their support for the project, with Frisco Planning and Zoning Secretary Sean Merrell saying “over 95% of [comment cards] are in favor of this, which is huge.”
“It’s amazing it’s taken this long, but I’m glad it’s coming,” Merrell said. “We usually don’t see big developments like this with that kind of support.”
What’s next
The proposed Trader Joe’s mixed-use development still requires final approval from the Frisco City Council before moving forward.
