Assisted living facility expansion plans get nods from Frisco City Council members

An assisted living facility at the northeast corner of Legacy Drive and Avon Lane has plans to expand this year.

Frisco City Council on Jan. 18 approved development of a new memory care center and eight single-family duplex cottages with a clubhouse at Bethesda Gardens Frisco, 10588 Legacy Drive. The facility was built about 15 years ago, and changes to the back half of the 10-acre property have passed through city hall.

The duplexes will be for residents “that are in transition between living independently and needing full-time care,” according to city documents. The cottages will incorporate “light” assisted living, and will help seniors transition into downsizing before moving into fully assisted living or a memory care facility.

The project is expected to begin in May, according to Debra Cox with JDJR Engineering & Consultants. Because it is an expansion to an existing facility, Cox said the project should be completed “in less than a year’s time.”

Council Member Shona Huffman said senior residents in the city are a rapidly growing demographic. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, about 8.4% of Frisco residents are 65 years old or older. In 2010, that total was 5.4% of Frisco residents.

“This is one of our fastest growing populations in the city,” Huffman said. “We’ve quickly grown in age, and the fact that we’re adapting to what the market’s deciding is a good plan.”
