The Texas Department of Transportation is currently ahead of schedule on a 40-month, $136.6 million project to reconstruct the I-35/Mayhill Road interchange and frontage roads, according to a TxDOT project fact sheet.
The project will “support growing traffic demands” in south Denton, TxDOT Public Information Officer Tila Grant said in an email.
What’s being done
Roughly 2 miles of I-35E from Pockrus Page Road to Loop 288 is expected to see 40 months of barricades to facilitate 981 working days, according to an Oct. 2 city of Denton staff report.
The two bridges at the I-35E/Mayhill Road interchange are nearly complete, Grant said. Construction crews will also widen the existing four-lane frontage roads.
In October, beams will be placed on the southbound bypass bridge and existing driveways on the frontage roads will be removed, according to the staff report.
Construction began in January, and the work is expected to continue until June 2029, though the project is already 31% complete, according to the project fact sheet.
Zachary Construction Corporation is the general contractor.
Keep in mind
As construction continues, daily and nighttime lane closures will fluctuate regularly around the interchange.
“Most lane closures are scheduled during overnight hours to minimize disruptions to motorists,” Grant said. “When closures are necessary, signed detours are put in place to help drivers safely navigate around work zones.”
Advance notice message boards and TxDOT media advisories and traffic alerts will also be posted to prepare drivers for significant closures and detours, she said.
According to current paving plans outlined in the staff report, Brinker Road will be fully closed until Oct. 17.
Project funding
The initial $123.5 million bid was 16.2% below the engineer’s estimate, according to the staff report. Now, the estimated cost is $136.6 million, according to the fact sheet.
The $139 million in funding for the project comes from traditional state and federal sources, Grant said.
