After the retirement of previous Parks and Recreation Director Lori Smeby in June, Richardson City Manager Don Magner announced Smeby’s replacement in a July 25 news release.

Yvonne Falgout was named the new parks and recreation director starting Aug. 1. Falgout has served as Richardson’s assistant director of recreation services since 2016, the news release said, which is part of her nearly 30-year career as a parks and recreation professional.

The breakdown

Falgout will oversee the department’s functions in the city, including:
  • Managing and maintaining 1,000 acres of parkland and 90 miles of trails
  • Overseeing special events
  • Managing the department's recreation, athletic and aquatic programs
Quote of note

“I am thrilled to take on the director's role and continue leading the dedicated staff in Richardson's Parks and Recreation Department,” Falgout said. “We are a strong department, among the leading agencies in North Texas, and I look forward to continuing and improving the amazing services we provide every day, as well as the traditions we have with many of our signature events like Wildflower, Santa’s Village and the Cottonwood festivals.”

City Manager Don Magner said Falgout is known for prioritizing resident and stakeholder relationships.

“We’ve benefitted from her experience and dedication these past seven years, and after conducting a thorough selection process, promoting her into this position was an easy decision,” Magner said. “She is deeply passionate about providing high-quality programs to the community and is dedicated to our people-first management philosophy.”
