Located just outside of Richardson on the southwest corner of Coit and West Campbell roads, The Popcorn Shack has been offering the snacking treat to locals for over 40 years. The gourmet popcorn store sells 60 flavors of popcorn, including numerous seasonal flavors. In addition, the store sells gift baskets and decorative tins along with other goods, such as candy and specialty sodas.

The Popcorn Shack first opened in 1982 under the name Popcorn Papa. After being renamed 10 years ago, the business moved into its current location in 2016. Darla Predtechenskis became owner in 2020. She said owning the business has been a chance to share the store’s hospitality with the community.

“I really see popcorn as a transformative food,” Predtechenskis said. “You have the ability ... to create an atmosphere and a mood to participate in people’s lives. My favorite part of the store is every person that walks through that front door.”

Among the popcorn flavors are a mix of savory and sweet varieties ranging from chocolate and caramel to extra butter. All flavors can be bought in tins and bags.

In addition to its in-store sales, Predtechenskis said The Popcorn Shack offers a business-to-business service providing popcorn to caterers, hotels, office buildings and more. The company also has an online store, though about 60% of its business is still conducted in person, Predtechenskis said.

The store’s location on the Richardson-Dallas border has helped endear it to both communities, Predtechenskis said.

“This is a community space, so where we’re located is important, because [the store] is super accessible,” she said.

Having been around for over 40 years, The Popcorn Shack continues to be a go-to for community members, including multiple generations of families, Predtechenskis said.

“I’ve seen people that used to come here as children that are now bringing their families,” she said.
