The second phase of Coit Road’s expansion has been pushed back by nearly a year, according to a presentation by town staff.
Phase 1 of the project, which covers Coit Road from First Street to Prosper Trail, started in September last year and is on track to wrap up this fall.
Town officials expected to start construction on Phase 2, which runs from Prosper Trail to Frontier Parkway, earlier this year. Officials now estimate that construction will not start until the end of this year, according to the presentation given April 28 at a town work session.
Town staff attributed the delay to the Texas Department of Transportation and utility companies, which must complete work on their end before construction can begin.
About the project
Coit Road will eventually be widened to six lanes. The current project will bring the roadway to four lanes, as well as prepare infrastructure like utilities and sidewalks for future expansion.
Phase 1 and Phase 2’s combined budget of $24 million is funded by Prosper’s 2020 bond program and a $2.8 million grant from Collin County, according to town documents.
Construction crews have already upgraded the drainage system, water lines and fire hydrants in Phase 1, town staff said in their presentation.
Crews will begin pavement work later this month, followed by landscaping to finish Phase 1.
The timeline
The start date for construction on Phase 2 was pushed back “to allow for franchise utility relocation efforts and additional coordination with TxDOT and Celina,” according to the project website.
Town officials are waiting for TxDOT to complete its review of the project and for third-party companies to finish relocating utilities before they can open bids for the construction contract and start work on Phase 2, according to town staff’s presentation.
Officials now plan to begin construction on Phase 2 by the end of the year but noted the new timeline is subject to change based on TxDOT and the utility companies.
