Citywide traffic signal upgrades are coming to Plano after officials approved $8.5 million to go toward new vehicle detection systems at a meeting June 8.

The new systems will be installed at 284 intersections across Plano for traffic signals to recognize when vehicles are stopped at an intersection.
Detection systems help prevent unnecessary delays in traffic, according to city documents. The upgrades will also improve signals, support more reliable traffic flow and reduce maintenance costs for outdated and failing equipment.
The specifics
Public Works Community Investment Program Manager Drew Zaeske said the new system will help the city’s engineering and police departments monitor real-time traffic conditions and construction impacts during emergencies.
The new intersections will provide full visibility of the four sides of an intersection, according to the city’s engineering department, and provide the following expansions:
- Vehicle and pedestrian counts
- Traffic signal performance metrics
- Fine-tuned signal timing
- Citywide signal coordination
Zaeske said installation will likely start this summer and take 15 months to complete.
Funds for the upgrades come from the city’s 2025-26 Street Improvement Community Investment Program, per city documents. The funds were collected mostly from the city’s 2021 bond.
