The Plano Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association is offering a volunteer delivery system as a solution to the possible risks of breaking coronavirus-related isolation.

The program was initially created to help members of the association, as many are part of the high-risk category, President Fabian Gordon said.

When there was less need than expected, the group shifted the program to offer assistance to all of Plano.

“It was really kind of taking a model that we've already built and saying, ‘Hey, let's just broaden the scope so that,' you know, 'these volunteers can be a little more busy and we can help more people,’” Gordon said.

The volunteer group, known as Plano Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association Members Assisting Plano, or PMAP, is available to deliver basic necessities like food and medicine. Assistance is meant for those in the COVID‐19 high-risk group and for those at‐risk or temporarily incapacitated.

Anyone who would like to request a delivery should send an email with their name, address, phone number and location of pickup. A volunteer will then claim the request and will coordinate on the pickup time and other delivery specifics before going to pick up the items requested.

“We merely act as a pickup and delivery agent,” Gordon said, "kind of Uber Eats-style.”

The alumni association is the perfect group to take on this responsibility, Gordon said. Each member has undergone background checks by the city and has taken part in the citizen’s police academy program.

The group has only done a handful of deliveries since expanding the service to the entire city at the beginning of April, but Gordon said he is hopeful that volunteers will have more deliveries to make as more people hear about the program.

Gordon has already prepared for a surplus of need by contacting the citizen’s academies for fire and emergency response for possible additional volunteers.

"We're here to help,” Gordon said. “Our goal is to keep our seniors and our at-risk residents safe, and we've got trustworthy people to do that."
