Little had improved as the commute started just before 7 a.m., with multiple accidents reported across the Metroplex on icy highways.
Both Grapevine-Colleyville and Carroll ISD schools are closed.
At DFW International Airport, more than 300 flights were cancelled.
The Grapevine area had power as of 6:40 a.m., but Oncor's website showed more than 197,000 customers without power in the Dallas area, with no restoration time listed.
Those who ventured out were posting photos on Twitter showing Hwy. 121 and other major roads as sheets of ice with a few tire grooves.
No thawing is expected anytime soon.
The National Weather Service says freezing rain and sleet are likely to continue for several more hours, with a high temperature of 28 degrees. The north wind is blowing at 15 mph.
The low tonight is expected to be 18 degrees.
Saturday's forecast calls for a chance of freezing rain in the afternoon with a high around 27 degrees, with more chance of freezing rain and sleet that night.
Some relief from freezing temperatures is expected Sunday, with a high of 34 and a low of about 23 degrees.
