In a message to parents and students, McKinney ISD announced April 23 it will be honoring its 2020 graduating seniors with a ceremony that will combine virtual and drive-thru elements.

A drive-thru graduation ceremony will be held at the McKinney ISD Stadium and will adhere to health recommendations, the district said in its message.

The district plans to publish a schedule of arrival times by last names or by houses and to ask students and their immediate families to attend.

“We believe that this alternative to a virtual graduation allows the graduate to be personally honored by the superintendent, principal, board of trustees and staff,” the district said in an email to the community.

In addition to this ceremony, the graduation will also be livestreamed, and a link will be provided to a video of the complete graduation following the event, the district said.

The district said it will provide professional audio and visual components, graduation photographs and a presentation of the student’s diploma.

“We invite parents and students to embrace the idea and to decorate their vehicles with congratulatory messages; ribbons; college, military, or career plans; the graduates’ name or whatever you feel will make your graduating senior feel special,” the district’s email said.

The speeches and other elements that comprise a traditional graduation will be included in this year’s graduation, but the district will record those ahead of time. These will be edited along with the drive-thru ceremony so that families can access the entire graduation video.

The district plans to send additional details in the near future, the district said in its message.

“We recognize that there is no plan that we can create to truly replace a traditional graduation, but we can work together to honor every child in a meaningful way,” the district’s email said.

The dates for McKinney ISD graduations are below. All ceremony times will be determined at a later date.

  • McKinney High School: Thursday, May 28
