When the previous owners decided to sell The Pub in downtown McKinney, Jimmy Karalla said he wasn’t interested until he visited the business on a Saturday night.
When he walked through the doors, almost every table was full, there was a live band playing classic rock and Karalla said his first thought was: “I love this place."
“Walking in, it just seemed so comfortable,” he said.
On the menu
The Pub offers a wide selection of craft beer and whiskey, as well as cocktails like The Pub Strawberry Lemonade, which includes homemade simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, strawberry puree and strawberry vodka topped with ginger beer.
The 1880 Old Fashioned, made with Redemption Rye, is another popular drink, Manager Cassie Correa-Henschke said. The Pub's menu also offers burgers, sandwiches, bar snacks and more.
“We have been told that we have the best burger in the square,” Correa-Henschke said.
Popular menu items include:
- Guinness beef stew: Homemade stew with Guinness stout
- Totchos: Crispy tater tots topped with queso, bacon, jalapenos, fried egg, sliced avocado and a sour cream drizzle
- The Pub burger: Local beef with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and onions
- Fish & chips: Smithwicks beer battered fish and steak fries, served with homemade tartar sauce
- The Jimmy burger: Local beef and roasted pulled pork with cheddar, white cheddar, onion straws and barbecue sauce
What makes the food at The Pub unique is that everything is made in-house, Correa-Henschke said.
“Alex, our head chef and partial owner, he's been here since the very beginning,” she said.
What makes it special
Customers often celebrate life events at The Pub, Correa-Henschke said, noting that there is a wedding party or birthday party at the restaurant almost every weekend.
In addition, The Pub hosts themed events, like 70’s and 80’s nights, and has pool tables and cornhole for customers to play.
The Pub staff is also involved in the McKinney community. In the past, they have donated a percentage of sales to a local women’s shelter and collected donations in exchange for t-shirts to raise funds for a hospital during mental health awareness month, Karalla said.
The atmosphere at The Pub is similar to the bar in the show “Cheers,” Karalla said. The staff at The Pub knows the names of the regular customers and some have gone on vacation together, he said.
“They have become a part of our family here,” Correa-Henschke said. “You always see a friendly face whenever you walk in.”
