McKinney planning and zoning commissioners gave their approval to rezone about 12 acres in McKinney from planned development to local commercial.

The tract of land in question is located about 450 feet east along Virginia Parkway and 900 feet south along Coit Road.

The property is vacant and unoccupied, according to the letter of intent submitted to the city. By rezoning to commercial uses, the land will better align with the city’s comprehensive plan and provide the flexibility needed for office, retail and restaurant uses to develop on the site, the letter stated.

“Both in McKinney and Frisco, a large amount of the surrounding area is currently residential,” staff said. “With the introduction of more commercial in this area it saves vehicle miles for residents, road maintenance for the city and should result in economic profit for the future businesses on this corridor and for the city.

Commissioners approved the requested variances without much discussion. The project will be sent to the June 7 McKinney City Council meeting with a favorable recommendation.
