Crow’s Martial Arts Academy opened about a year ago at the University Business Plaza along University Drive.
About the business
The school offers a wide range of martial arts classes for kids and adults. Subjects include Jun-Fan Gung Fu, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu grappling and more, according to its website. The school also offers boxing classes for conditioning and competition, Crow said.
Additionally, the academy offers sports science courses meant to improve the performance of sports athletes like football players and basketball players.
“I give you a wide range of stuff to offer,” he said. “I give a lot of different arts to give the person more options and more benefits to protect themselves.”
Meet the owner
The martial arts school is headed by Crow, who co-owns the school. He has more than 50 years of experience in learning and teaching martial arts.
“I started when I was 16 and been doing it ever since,” Crow said.
Crow’s operated several schools in the past before opening his most recent school in McKinney. Throughout his career he’s trained with instructors such as Sifu Richard Bustillo and Guru Victor De Thouars. Crow also worked as an assistant to a former Dallas Cowboys conditioning coach between 1983 and 1989.
What’s special about it?
Crow’s experience with the Cowboys has led him to offering sports science courses that teach energy and sensitivity drills, footwork and more. The sports science classes aren’t just for football players though, Crow said.
“It can be for baseball, basketball, whatever the case,” he said. “We also teach a kids program for martial arts.”
Every one of the school's programs are geared to benefiting the students, Crow said. The school offers drills and hand-eye coordination to improve a sports player’s timing and strength and conditioning, he said. Devices are also used to capture data on how fast a football player is moving, for instance.
“I always tell people, no matter if you’re into sports, martial arts or whatever, you have to understand the concept of things because sometimes you can be a day late and a dollar short,” he said.
