County and local city officials are making preparations for winter conditions.

Denton County

Denton County is closing all facilities Feb. 3-4 due to inclement weather following a briefing with the National Weather Service, according to a county news release.

NWS officials indicated that the anticipated ice from the winter storm will impede travel both Feb. 3 and Feb. 4, according to the county.

Road and bridge employees will monitor road conditions throughout the winter storm. Denton County offices are also taking measures to limit the electrical load by


ensuring thermostats are turned down and lights are off.

Denton County will continue to publish weather alerts and provide a list of warming stations on social media accounts, according to the county.

All Denton County offices will resume normal hours Feb. 7.

Lewisville


The city of Lewisville is making operational changes due to the projected inclement weather and ice accumulations, according to the city.

All city of Lewisville facilities will be closed Feb. 3, in accordance with advice from the National Weather Service and Denton County Office of Emergency Management. The closure is in a response to hazardous road conditions expected to start overnight Feb. 2.

Thrive, the city’s main recreation center, LLELA, and the Lewisville Public Library are closing at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 to give employees time to get home safely, according to the city.

In addition, the skate park and all athletic fields at Railroad Park and Lewisville Lake Park will close at 6 p.m. Feb. 2, and public restrooms in all city parks are being closed.


The streets division has been treating bridges, elevated roadways and limited sections of major streets with a brine solution since Feb. 1, with the goal of treating them three times, according to the city. Pretreatment with brine solution can help alleviate ice accumulation on roads.

Rain projected for Feb. 2 in the afternoon and evening could dilute the brine solution and reduce its effectiveness. Drivers are urged to stay home if they can and to exercise extreme caution if they must drive.

The city does have a supply of sand that will be used to treat major roads and bridges if there is an accumulation of ice. The city does not sand residential streets and alleys.

Flower Mound

The town of Flower Mound will close its facilities due to inclement weather Feb. 3 and 4, according to a town news release.

All non-emergency town offices will close including Town Hall, the Community Activity Center, the Senior Center, the Library, the Animal Adoption Center and the Municipal Court.


All Library and Parks and Recreation programs on Thursday will be canceled. Police, Fire, emergency services, and essential employees will remain in operation at all times. The Trails and Bikeway Master Plan and subsequent board meeting on Feb. 3 have been rescheduled to Feb. 16.

Public works crews began pretreating major intersections and bridges Feb. 1. Several departments, including public works and emergency services, will increase staffing beginning Feb. 2 and will enter 24-hour operations for as long as necessary, according to the release.

Republic Services is suspending trash and recycling collection Feb. 3, according to the town. If weather permits, the missed routes will be picked up Feb. 4 and Feb. 5. Updates will be posted on the town’s website and social media pages.

The town recommends residents follow safety precautions: keep your family warm and check on any elderly family or neighbors who may need extra blankets; bring your dogs and cats inside; either cover plants or bring them inside; and cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing and breaks.

Highland Village

The city of Highland Village street department has started preparing for icy conditions, and waste-disposal services have been canceled, according to a city news release.

Community Waste Disposal canceled garbage and recycling services for Feb. 3 due to inclement weather. The service will monitor conditions and schedule a later pickup of trash.

As for the streets, a brine has been applied to the bridges on FM 2499 and on the major intersections in the city. A brine application prevents ice and snow from bonding to the pavement and is considered a proactive, cost-effective and environmentally safe practice for winter road maintenance. Street crews are prepared to sand major roadways as needed per the sanding operation plan, according to the city.

Parks and recreation staff are winterizing and turning off all drinking fountains throughout the city beginning Feb. 2. The following restrooms will also be closed: Highland Village Tennis Center, Copperas Branch Park, Doubletree Ranch Park, Unity Park Concession and Unity Park Gray Field

The following restrooms will remain open as long as there are no power failures: Lakeside Community Park, Unity Park Kids Kastle and Pilot Knoll Park Overnight and Day-Use

Drinking fountains and all restrooms will reopen Feb. 7, barring any unforeseen changes in the weather forecast.
