The Highland Village City Council voted unanimously Sept. 14 to increase residents' fees for trash collection services by 3.9%.

This increase requested by the city's contractor means residents will now pay $18.83 a month for trash collection, 70 cents more than the previous monthly fee. Senior citizens, who receive a 10% discount, will now pay $16.95 a month.

This increase comes after a nearly 12% cost hike last October, after the city transitioned to sending its waste to a landfill in Denton rather than in Lewisville.

A representative from Community Waste Disposal told the council during its meeting that the latest change was due in part to wage changes and hiring increases as a response to COVID-19.
