YMCA officials broke ground on renovations Sept. 6 for the Lake Highlands Family YMCA in Dallas, located at 8920 Stults Road.

The Lake Highlands renovation project will add more than 15,000 square feet for facility improvements. These improvements include two group exercise studios, an expanded fitness equipment space, an outdoor family pool, a community room, and a new lobby and entrance, according to YMCA officials.

“It’s important that our facility mirrors our capabilities as an organization,” said Curt Hazelbaker, CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, in a statement. “We strive to set our members up for success, and this is just one avenue that can help do that. Our community and staff have been patiently waiting for this time to come, so we’re excited and ready to get started.”

Other facility improvements include a new playground, an expanded child care room, a "dedicated state-of-the-art" cycling area for 25 bicycles, a new administrative office suite, and updates to the basketball gym and locker rooms, according to YMCA officials.

“This is such a special part of building that relationship with the community,” Dallas City Council Member Adam McGough said. “I can’t wait to see all the different lives that will be impacted by the expansion of this facility going forward.”

YMCA officials said the project will also increase the parking lot capacity by 68%, going from 122 parking spaces to 205.

According to YMCA officials, construction will occur in three phases over a 14-month period, starting in September with the parking lot expansion followed by renovations to the interiors by the summer of 2023. The full renovation project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Members will still be able to access the YMCA center and other facilities while construction is underway. 214-221-9622. www.ymcadallas.org/locations/lake_highlands
