A proposal for a brewery named Pirate Panda Brewing was approved during a Roanoke City Council meeting on April 14.
Brothers David and Pablo Medina were present at the meeting for the request of a two-story brewery at 200 S. Oak St.
The site plan consists of an 8,028-square-foot building, which includes a 4,328-square-foot brewery area, a 3,500-square-foot outdoor patio and a 200-square-foot kitchen, according to city documents.
Planning and zoning approved the site plan during an April 6 meeting, according to previous reporting.

“It’s more than a brewery, it’s a space for families to come together,” David Medina said. “To sit down and have your dog, to have your kids and hopefully enjoy some good beers ... so we can make some money.”
The details
During the citizens’ comment portion of the meeting, questions were raised about parking concerns and loud music.
City Manager Cody Petree said the business would be required to have 23 parking spaces by code, and the submitted plans include 18 off-street parking spaces and 11 on-street spaces.
Mayor Scooter Giersch also mentioned the city’s parking garage that is under construction. That will bring 430 parking spaces near the proposed brewery, according to previous reporting.
David Medina addressed the music concerns by stating the venue would like to have music and events, but would follow rules and not be a nuisance.
“We want to be part of the community and want the people to feel proud to come here and have a beer,” he said.
What else?
Giersch questioned the brothers about the plan for an open concept on the second floor. He mentioned the location near Hard Eight BBQ could provide a heavy amount of smoke throughout the day and night to their guests.
Pablo Medina said the second floor would be for private events, but said they would consider making some changes to help with ventilation.
He added that construction would start on May 1 with hopes of being done in December.
