"Kurt and I, we both have [a] Bachelor of Science in horticulture,” Donna said. “Over 30 years ago ... we bought some acreage in Colleyville to practice our horticulture, and Unique Landscaping just sort of grew up around us.”
Donna said in addition to plants and design work, Unique Landscaping can also provide their clients with trees.
"One thing that makes us unique is that we have our own tree farm, and that's what we do on our 5 acres in Colleyville,” she said.
While they mostly grow oak trees at that farm, Donna said she has also started dabbling in Texas Sabal palm trees at a separate farm near Lake Livingston.
Having a beautiful natural environment surrounding your home can be cathartic during the COVID-19 pandemic, Donna said.
“There's a mental health aspect to it that they taught us about in college—just the enjoyment and the peaceful feeling you get by being out in nature or getting your hands dirty being around close to the earth, in the dirt or on the grass,” she said.
Donna is hands on when it comes to designing a client’s spaces. That includes custom landscape drawings and designs provided after a free consultation.
“For example, I would identify their variety of grass and tell them at what height to mow it, or if they're looking for a screen, I would suggest something that would be adaptive to the environment,” she said.
Those looking to up their landscaping game prior to putting a home for sale are some of the Kauffmans' regular customers.
“We get a lot of requests because somebody is ready to market their home, and they need to get it cleaned up,” she said.
She had a piece of advice for anyone preparing a home for sale.
“The most important thing they can do is open up the front door,” she said. “You always are directing the eye to the front door. That's landscape design 101.”
