Collin County offices and government buildings will be closed to the public on Feb. 3 in anticipation of hazardous winter weather conditions, a news release from County Judge Chris Hill stated.

No decision has been made yet for Feb. 4, according to the release.

The National Weather Service is expecting precipitation throughout the day Feb. 2, which is anticipated to freeze shortly after 7 p.m. Collin County warned that road conditions will remain dangerous.

The Collin County Emergency Management and public works teams are working with several entities “to ensure open lines of communication and cooperation,” the release stated. They include the National Weather Service, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, local fire departments and the American Red Cross.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) spent recent weeks inspecting more than 300 generating units across the state. These units made up 85% of the lost megawatt hours during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021.

Weatherization elements that ERCOT said it would check include heat-tracing elements on pipes, enclosures over equipment to fight against wind chill and insulation over equipment that needs it.

“The Texas Division of Emergency Management and ERCOT are reporting that Texas' electricity generators will be able to provide sufficient power generation throughout the duration of this weather event,” the release from Collin County stated.

Collin County said in the release that localized power outages may be caused due to broken tree limbs and downed power lines. Oncor Electric Delivery, CoServ Electric, and Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative were said to be on standby in the event of power outages.

The county urged residents to call 911 for medical emergencies, fires or electrical hazards.

For utility outages, the county provided these numbers to call:

  • Oncor Electric Delivery: 888-313-4747

  • CoServ Electric: 844-330-0762

  • Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative: 903-482-7111

  • Fannin-Collin Electric Cooperative: 800-695-9020

  • Farmers Electric Cooperative: 903-455-1715

  • Texas New Mexico Power: 888-866-7456

  • Atmos Energy: 866-322-8667

  • Suddenlink Communications: 877-794-2724

Residents can report obstructed county roads to the public works department at 972-548-3700. Issues on city streets and bridges should be reported directly to the appropriate city, the release stated.
