When she opened Treasure Box Toys last December, these were the words that announced the store’s grand opening on social media. As the store celebrates its first year in business, that giving spirit continues.
“It brings so much joy to see someone light up when they give or receive a special gift,” McNaught said.
Treasure Box Toys carries a variety of toys, collectibles, games and gifts for babies to teens. Customers will find Squishmallows, gel pen sets, wooden block toys, books, stationery, and many more family-oriented games and toys. McNaught moved to Texas from Dresden, Germany, in 2001; attended Collin College; and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to opening her shop, she worked as a product designer producing mobile apps. She also had a small business painting murals for kids’ rooms. A shopping trip with her daughter helped inspire McNaught’s next chapter.
“My daughter was into collectibles, and sometimes we’d run all over town looking for different games or plush toys,” McNaught said. “One day I thought, ‘What if we partnered together to select items that kids really want?’”
Today, McNaught said they are a true mother-daughter team.
“I run orders by my daughter to see what she likes,” McNaught said. “She’s my little adviser. I wanted her to see the journey of starting a business, too.”
McNaught said her experience in the world of digital product design had valuable applications to starting her current business.
“In that field, it’s critical to listen to your customer’s needs and to adapt quickly,” she said. “Now, I’m constantly listening to what our customers are looking for and adjusting our product offering based on their feedback.”
McNaught added the store’s Dallas Parkway location was ideal for a couple of reasons: its convenience to neighboring communities of Plano and Prosper and its proximity to other family-owned businesses.
“We’re right next to Frisco Diner, which I hoped would invite people to stroll through our store,” McNaught said. The shop also features an online store.
“All products that we sell in the store are available online as well,” McNaught said. Angelika McNaught operates the store with the help of her daughter Lanie.
