North Texas has many transplants, with many unable to travel home for Thanksgiving.

A local group hopes to provide a free meal to anyone who desires it on Turkey Day in Flower Mound.

The details

River Walk Social, which calls itself "the food and entertainment destination on the River Walk in Flower Mound," states on its Facebook page that it invites anyone in the community who is far from family, looking for community, and in need of a hot meal and a place to spend the day to a free "No One Eats Alone" Thanksgiving dinner at Underdogs, 4106 River Walk Drive. The event, on Nov. 23, will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. This is the second year for the event.

What they're saying

"We will be serving a hot meal consisting of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, gravy and a roll," the group wrote on its Facebook page about the event, adding that while there is no charge for this meal, drinks will be available for purchase.

Paula Retz, local marketing coordinator for River Walk Food and Beverage, said in an email that everyone has a story, from just relocating to Texas, being recently divorced, having financial struggles or other issues, and "the bar/restaurant has always been a place for people to come together and find a home away from home, and what better way to bring people together than with food and football."

"We hope this event gives people a place to go and place to feel welcome," Retz said. "A place to be a part of the community."

She said all the staff on this day are volunteers, and vendors donate food and "we put together a hot Thanksgiving meal with a feel of home and family. Thanksgiving is for friends, family and community."
