Local Pint was founded on a love of craft beer, but co-owners Anna Borland Sage and Phillip Coleman say it is their adaptability that has kept them open for five years.

The Flower Mound restaurant dealt with a rocky 50-week construction process and was one of the first restaurants in town to shift to carryout-only service during COVID-19. But thanks to Sage and Coleman’s willingness to adapt, Local Pint has thrived, celebrating its fifth anniversary Oct. 13.

“We deal in liquids, but we need to be fluid,” Coleman said. “If you’re stubborn and scared of change, that’s where you’ll run into issues.”

That adaptability can be found in the constantly changing tap wall. Local Pint carries 48 beers, 42 of which are regularly rotating. The food menu will also see items phase in and out, and the owners say even the hours have changed during Local Pint’s five years.

Sage credits feedback from the community for knowing when and where changes are welcome.

“We’ve always said that the key is listening to the customers,” Sage said. “The community has been fantastic. We always poll our customers before we make any big changes.”

The community has repaid the favor, Sage said Local Pint has grown its customer base almost entirely by word of mouth.“People say it’s like a second living room for them,” Sage said. “We have people that come in four or five days a week, and that’s what we value, that relationship with our customers.”

Beyond having one of the largest craft beer selections in the area, Sage and Coleman added they will now have customers who come back just for the food as well. Local Pint’s menu features an assortment of bar food, including its award-winning burger, chicken tenders and chicken wings.

“Even Monday’s have gotten busy,” Coleman said. “It’s a good problem to have, but our bartenders laugh when they get a slow hour here and there.”

While Sage and Coleman have not shied away from change when needed, that love of craft beer is still the foundation for Local Pint, according to Sage.

“Kind of the whole backbone of this place is that we want to educate people on craft beer,” she said. “It’s great when you have someone come in who only drinks domestics and they become one of our regulars. I mean, you can find a beer for everyone.”
