Repairs on the pedestrian bridge at Quakertown Park were completed in late May and the bridge reopened May 28 after a roughly six-month closure, according to a May 29 city staff report.
The overview
The bridge closed to foot traffic in mid-November after a vehicle collided with the west end of the bridge, damaging the guardrail and facade, the staff report states.
The repairs to the bridge cost about $7,650 and were paid for with money from the city’s risk retention fund.
Engineering firm Kimley-Horn assessed the damage and found an additional $53,300 in needed repairs, including cracked and chipped concrete and exposed steel supports. Performing the additional repairs will extend the bridge’s lifespan by 25 years, the report states.
Looking ahead
The report states that city staff is currently working to identify funds for the additional repairs.
Kimley-Horn also developed two plans to replace the bridge, which would require approval from the historic landmark commission, City Council, and the recreation and beautification board. The replacement options include:
