The Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center, the city of Denton’s animal shelter, will kick off a $14.5 million expansion project with a groundbreaking ceremony April 29, said Kayla Herrod, the city of Denton's deputy director of marketing and communications.
What’s happening
The shelter is expanding at its current location to meet the rising demand for animal care in Denton. According to the city’s website, the shelter is expected to grow 38% by 2030, prompting the need for expansion.
According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, 9,761 square feet will be added onto the existing 18,205-square-foot facility.
The expansion project includes:
- Replacement of the facility’s heating and cooling systems to address inadequacies in the current facility
- Larger dog adoption and stray holding areas that will include new indoor and outdoor runs, plus visitation rooms
- New dog isolation and quarantine spaces to help prevent disease
- Relocation of the veterinary services portion of the facility with a larger recovery and monitoring area for treated animals, a larger surgery suite, designated work spaces for staff and designated cleaning, prep and storage areas
- Updated animal housing rooms to include larger kennels
- Updated and new exercise yards moved closer to animal housing
Funding for the project comes from the city’s $291 million bond package, which voters passed in November 2023.
What's next?
The TDLR filing states the construction end date for the adoption center is scheduled for late October 2027. City officials will have more details about the groundbreaking and expansion within the next month.
