All Flock cameras on Harris County Precinct 4 property have been decommissioned, Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones announced in an Oct. 8 press release.
Breaking news
The cameras, which monitor and record license plates, can be used to track vehicles. They will no longer be used on precinct-owned property, per the release. The technology has come under public scrutiny many times at recent Harris County Commissioners Court meetings, with residents raising concerns about privacy and safety.
In a statement, Briones said that though the cameras can be useful tools, “private ownership of the data and the use of AI present serious issues.”
“Nothing is more important to me than the safety and security of Harris County residents,” Briones said. “Safety and security includes protecting their privacy and the privacy of their families. I have heard my Precinct 4 residents’ legitimate concerns and am committed to addressing them. I will work closely with the community, my colleagues on Commissioners Court, our law enforcement partners, and our Harris County Attorney to determine the best path forward for the entire county. But I cannot wait to act. These Precinct 4 cameras are offline.”
