Cy-Fair ISD selects namesake for Elementary School No. 57

The board of trustees for Cy-Fair ISD unanimously voted to rename Elementary School No. 57 at the April 11 meeting.

Elementary School No. 57, now named after Sue McGown, will open for the 2022-23 school year in August. Sue McGown Elementary School will be located at 21211 Tuckerton Road, Cypress.

McGown worked for CFISD for 26 years and served in numerous roles from teacher to principal. She was the opening principal for Hamilton Middle School, where she was principal for 13 years and brought distinctions to the school. She also opened Cypress Woods High School, where she remained until her resignation in 2011.

Upon presenting his recommendation for the board to approve renaming the school after McGown, Superintendent Mark Henry added remarks.

“And all I would add to that is what separates Sue is she’s a culture builder,” Henry said. “And she built a strong culture in Hamilton that continues today. In fact, one of our board members as I was talking to him last week, he said, ‘I know Hamilton is good and the current principal is great, but there was something deeper there, and that goes all the way back to Sue.’”

McGown was surrounded by supporters and former co-workers who were in attendance to commend their friend on this recognition.

“I am eternally grateful; I am also appreciative to have been a servant leader because it is truly what I believe to be an educator’s dream,” McGown said.
