Cy-Fair ISD Livestock Show and Sale

Nearly 700 high school students participated in the 22nd annual Cy-Fair ISD Livestock Show and Sale from Feb. 4-6 at the CFISD Exhibit Center on Telge Road. This year’s event hosted a record-breaking amount of exhibitors. Nearly 900 student projects and animals were on display, and more than $500,000 was generated from the premium livestock auction, said Denise Kubecka, CFISD career and technical education coordinator.

The FFA is an inter-curricular organization offered at all CFISD schools and designed for students interested in agriculture and leadership. Students involved in FFA raise animals, including sheep, swine, chickens, rabbits, turkeys, goats and steer, to show and sell at the annual show. FFA students also present projects on agricultural mechanics and horticulture.

Students began working with their animals as early as last May and have put in countless hours of work, Kubecka said. Students tend to their animal at least two times a day.

The goal of the program is to teach students how to take responsibility, Kubecka said.

“It’s a big commitment of time,” she said. “Regardless of how busy you are or how you’re feeling that day, you have to get up and tend to the animals. It does take a great deal of time management and responsibility—two qualities that will make you successful no matter what career field you go into.”
