At Cy-Fair ISD’s regular October board meeting tonight, the board of trustees will vote on the district’s legislative agenda for the 85th Legislative Session, which begins Jan. 10. These priorities will dictate the issues district officials advocate for in the interest of students and CFISD as a whole. The priorities cover four categories—school finance, assessment and accountability, school choice and transparency. The individual priorities, which were presented at an Oct. 6 CFISD board workshop, can be found below: School Finance
- Compel the legislature to calculate the cost of the “general diffusion of knowledge” each biennium.
- Develop a simple and equitable school finance system.
- Fund public education at a level greater than the current minimum standard. The system should account for changes in demographics, inflation, technology and required programs by the legislature.
- Provide adequate funding for quality pre-K programs.
- Ensure adequate funding for the high quality implementation of House Bill 5.
Assessment & Accountability
- Align state and federal assessment and accountability systems. Eliminate any assessments not required by the federal law, including writing and social studies.
- Eliminate the A-F school rating system. Instead, use Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable and Unacceptable as rating designations.
- Provide multiple ways for a student to demonstrate college and career readiness.
School Choice
- Support school choice that requires uniform standards and requirements for all schools receiving state funds.
- Oppose legislation that diverts funding from public schools.
