Jersey Village City Council members will select one of five applicants to fill the Place 3 City Council vacancy at the July 21 regular meeting.
Two-minute impact
City Council accepted Michelle Martin’s resignation from Place 3 during the June 15 regular meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact. The appointee will hold the seat until the next city general election on May 1, 2027, per meeting documents.
With a new fiscal year approaching, public hearings will be held during the regular meeting for the following FY 2026-27 budgets:
- Crime Control Prevention District, or CCPD
- Fire Control, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services District, or FCPEMSD
- Municipal
After the public hearings, council members will discuss and consider adopting the CCPD and FCPEMSD FY 2026-27 budgets, and postponing the municipal budget’s final vote to Aug. 18.
A budget work session will be held July 17 to review and discuss the FY 2026-27 municipal budget and tax rate.
Some contextAccording to the proposed FY 2026-27 budget book, the Jersey Village Fire Department completed a review of emergency responses spanning from April 8, 2025, to June 24, 2026 that showed emergency medical calls were more frequent than those related to structure fires or other major incidents.
Data showed 72.8% of calls occurred without another incident taking place at the same time, per the budget book, and the median response time remained under the department's performance target.
Based on the analysis, the proposed budget reduces minimum staffing from six to five firefighters. The city of Jersey Village released a statement that read six personnel per shift will remain the standard operating staffing level, and that the minimum staffing number applies in the case a firefighter calls out.
Jersey Village Professional Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters Local 5538 released an open letter to the Jersey Village community via Facebook stating that fewer firefighters means fewer critical tasks can be performed simultaneously in emergency situations.
“Response time is important, but it does not measure whether enough firefighters arrived to perform all required emergency-scene tasks safely and simultaneously,” IAFF Local 5538 said in the letter. “An apparatus can arrive within a benchmark and still arrive without enough personnel to complete the work the emergency requires.”
