The Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 board of commissioners are scheduled to discuss personnel evaluation tools and goals during a special meeting at 2 p.m. July 14.
Harris County ESD 9 serves as a political subdivision and taxing entity that supports fire suppression and emergency medical service operations for Cy-Fair Fire Department.
Current situation
During the June 25 regular board meeting, Commissioner Cameron Dickey said an ESD committee has been developing and fine-tuning a performance evaluation tool for the Cy-Fair Fire Department chief.
“I think the resulting evaluation will be something we can use for many years going forward,” Dickey said. “We also designed it with the intention that it would be a tool that can be interpreted and parsed into the other leadership roles throughout the organization.”
Dickey said the commissioners are at a disadvantage in setting goals within the tool as there has been no performance evaluation or set performance standards, besides the budget, previously in place for the chief. Dickey said they are using industry standards, performance metrics provided in ESD 9 monthly meetings, and general interactions to set firm metrics for the tool.
Dates to know
The board of commissioners planned a timeline for finalizing and presenting the evaluation results:
- July 14: board workshop to walk through and distribute the developed tool
- July 24: deadline for evaluation to take place
- July 29: board workshop to examine and finalize evaluation results
- July 30: Present results at regular board meeting
“A lot of work and energy has gone into constructing what we think is a really strong performance evaluation,” Dickey said. “Really covering the breadth of this very complex district, covering everything from the firefighting side to the EMS side.”
