The backstory
Dawes said she created the academies as a way to make a positive change in the gymnastics community.
"We were finding a way to turn that pain into purpose," Dawes said "and that's what started the academies."
Dawes said the focus of the academies is not on what students couldn't do in the sport, but on what they are strong and good at.
Quote of note
"It's not about training the next Simone Biles or Dominique Dawes, or some elite level program and sacrificing your childhood," Dawes said. "It's about making sure that every young kid that walks through the doors recognizes how unique, and special they are and how they matter."
Looking forward
