Montgomery County approves new Magnolia broadband project

The Montgomery County Commissioners Court voted to approve a new $590,000 project during a Feb. 6 meeting aimed at bringing public Wi-Fi and fiber internet access to several parks and centers in the Magnolia area.

The breakdown

The new project is set to provide fiber internet and public Wi-Fi services at several county locations, including:

• Magnolia Annex
• Community Development Center
• Montgomery County-Magnolia Horse Arena
• Magnolia Little League Park
• Magnolia Youth Park

Fiber lines will be installed from the Magnolia Annex to the Precinct 2 traffic control and signal office and the Precinct 2 Recycling Center.

What else?

The Montgomery County Information Technology department was also granted $188,000 to separate the traffic control system from the rest of the county’s IT infrastructure in order to help with servicing of the traffic control system. According to Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack, the current structure of the traffic control system does not allow for IT to handle traffic light service requests without affecting other parts of IT infrastructure.

The change will take place over the next several months, according to information from the meeting.
