A record number of Travis County voters cast ballots during early voting for the Nov. 3 midterm election, according to unofficial results from the Travis County Clerk’s Office.
Voters cast 449,556 early ballots in person and by mail, or 47.39% of the county’s 948,567 registered voters. Including Election Day, 552,560 ballots were cast, putting unofficial turnout at 58.25%.
The details
Of the early ballots, 430,859 were cast in person and 18,697 by mail, according to the clerk’s office. Another 101,766 were cast on Election Day.
The previous midterm high was 349,045 early ballots in 2018, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.
“Travis County voters showed up in record numbers, and our team is honored to serve them,” Travis County Clerk Dyana Limon-Mercado said in a Nov. 3 news release.
Some context
Overall turnout topped the 51.99% recorded in 2022 but trailed the 63% recorded in 2018, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
The election followed a statewide glitch that kept more than 35,000 Travis County voter registrations submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety from reaching the county, some for nearly a year, Community Impact reported. As of Oct. 14, the county’s voter registrar had told Limon-Mercado that the backlog was cleared for Travis County, Community Impact reported.
What’s next
Totals are unofficial until the canvass, which must be completed by Nov. 17. Until then, according to the clerk’s office, the county will still count:
Domestic mail ballots postmarked by 7 p.m. Nov. 3 and received by 5 p.m. Nov. 4
Overseas ballots received by Nov. 9
Provisional ballots, after review by the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office and the Early Voting Ballot Board
Runoffs for local races will be held Dec. 12, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.
