Incumbent Candace Hunter and newcomers Jessica Neufeld, Sarah Dille and Laurie Solis lead their Austin ISD trustee races, and no candidate has a majority in the At-Large Position 9 race, according to unofficial early voting results from Travis County.
Thirteen candidates ran for five of the nine seats on the board: single-member districts 1, 4, 6 and 7, and At-Large Position 9.
Candidates must receive more than 50% of the vote to win. If no candidate does, the top two vote-getters advance to a December runoff.
The early voting results, released at 8:37 p.m., do not include votes cast on Election Day. Community Impact will update this article as more vote totals are released.
Trustee District 1: Cheryl Bradley holds 41.63% of the early vote at 7,868 votes, and incumbent Candace Hunter holds 58.37% at 11,034 votes.
Trustee District 4: Edward Bradfield holds 13.05% of the early vote at 3,936 votes; Tricia Mitchell Kim holds 27.84% at 8,398 votes; and Jessica Neufeld holds 59.11% at 17,829 votes.
Trustee District 6: Sarah Dille holds 60.45% of the early vote at 14,736 votes; Marie Lebron holds 19.70% at 4,802 votes; and Alex San Martin holds 19.85% at 4,839 votes.
Trustee District 7: Jimmy Counihan holds 40.37% of the early vote at 11,357 votes, and Laurie Solis holds 59.63% at 16,777 votes.
Trustee At-Large Position 9: Kirk Becker holds 13.03% of the early vote at 21,611 votes; Pamela Mathai holds 44.63% at 74,038 votes; and Cynthia Soliz holds 42.34% at 70,245 votes.
District 1 trustee Candace Hunter is the only trustee who sought reelection, so at least four new trustees will join the board. It is the first time since 2014 that every AISD trustee race on the ballot was contested.
Some context
The new trustees could take office with limited authority. Austin ISD is subject to potential state intervention after Burnet and Webb middle schools each received a fifth consecutive failing rating from the Texas Education Agency in August, as previously reported by Community Impact. Under state law, that requires the education commissioner to close the campuses or replace the elected board.
Something to note
Any runoff elections will be held in December. The date will be set after the Nov. 3 results are canvassed.
