Tavel Bristol-Joseph, pastry chef and co-owner of Austin restaurants Emmer & Rye, Henbit, Hestia, Kailmotxo and TLV, is leading a new scholarship fund that is now open to Austin Community College culinary students.
The Bristol-Joseph Culinary Scholarship Fund, which the chef created in partnership with ACC and the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce, will provide two ACC culinary arts students with $6,000 each, which can be used for tuition, class supplies, fees or transportation costs. In addition to the financial benefits, the scholarship fund will include mentoring from Bristol-Joseph and a one-day stage at one of the Emmer & Rye team's five restaurants.
Bristol-Joseph, who was born in Guyana before moving to Brooklyn to attend culinary arts school, was named one of Food & Wine Magazine's best new chefs in 2020.
"Honestly, those accolades are great, but the greatest accomplishment I feel I've achieved is being able to help students that are looking for guidance, a little advice, mentorship—all of the things I wish I had in culinary school," Bristol-Joseph said in a video message presented to the ACC board of trustees April 5.
