Cedar Park City Council approved a $2.1 million design and engineering contract May 28 with landscape architecture firm SWA Group for the next set of improvements at Lakeline Park, dubbed Phase 2.
The details
Council members approved a master plan for future improvements at the park, also developed by SWA Group, in April. Under the new contract, the firm will develop construction-ready plans to carry out the vision for the next phase as described in the master plan.
Highlights of Phase 2 include expanded trails, an elevated walkway through the tree canopy, a new parking lot on the south side of the park, additional restrooms near the soccer fields and south parking lot, a disc golf course, and expanded recreational and educational amenities.
Discussing the plan in April, landscape architect Scott McCready said residents told his team they wanted to feel more immersed in nature at Lakeline Park.
"We think of the park as what you experience on the north side today, but throughout there's an enormous amount of acreage that people don't actually get much access to, and we think that bringing people to those natural areas that are more hidden within the site can really elevate people's understanding of the importance [of] nature within the community," McCready said.
The design contract also includes continued architectural and engineering work throughout the future construction of the project, city documents state.
The context
The park first opened in March 2023. Phase 1 included a playground, 4 miles of paved trails, 10 acres of athletic fields, a large lawn and improvements around the lake.
Funding for the design of Phase 2 was approved by voters as part of the city's 2022 bond program. The construction budget has yet to be determined, according to city staff. The funding will depend in part on the work done during the engineering and design process.
What's next
The design process is set to be completed by spring 2027 and construction to begin in summer 2027, senior project manager Caleb Stockton said. The city aims to open the Phase 2 improvements in fall 2028, Stockton said.
Also of note
The city of Cedar Park also plans to build a pedestrian bridge over Bell Boulevard that will connect Lakeline Park to the Brushy Creek Regional Trail and the Twin Lakes Family YMCA campus.
That project is now expected to be completed in early 2028, city staff told Community Impact in May.
